Mysterious, refined, passionate, sometimes violent, Josiane Pape's paintings invoke the viewer's emotions inviting us into mystical realms.

The choice of colors? Nobody can be indifferent to her palette. Strong warm colors set the tone, shades of violet, green and black with touches of blue and orange. "My color palette isn't cheerful but it reflects the most important influences in my life whether they be religious, esoteric, mystic or exotic. These colors associated with movement are those who best reflect my vision of relationships between man and woman, the profane and the sacred as well as my relationship to the Journey".

Josiane Pape's paintings suggest more than they show, without becoming abstract. No faces or expressions for her characters, just a few warm touches show life; a life with struggles and combats never dispensed of disarming harmony. "My work as a whole portrays the incessant struggle between man and woman and of woman's resistance to submission".

She studied with Jacques Bartoli, a provincial painter from whom she learned the glazing technique. From Pierre Bonard, a brilliant colorist, she learned a "modern" concept of painting and color that takes you to the limits of abstraction….. At first Josiane Pape's artistic creations were intimist or "vague" as she likes to describe them but her artistic expression has evolved, gradually introducing matter and pushing back the limits of abstraction further each time.

An art lover and a perfectionist, she began exhibiting late because she was persuaded she was unable to show successfully completed works. Today, Josiane Pape has decided to exhibit her paintings.

If in her paintings she evokes more than she shows and suggests more than she says, it is to permit the viewer to freely enter her world, situated midway between the sacred, the religious and the pictorial.
